MakeShaper was established in Sanford, North Carolina with a focus on producing high-quality 3D printer filament in 2015. The company quickly gained a reputation for its commitment to engineering and manufacturing excellence in the United States. By producing a variety of filaments, MakeShaper catered to both professional and hobbyist markets, emphasizing quality and consistency.

In February 2019, MakeShaper was acquired by Village Plastics, an Ohio-based manufacturer known for its high-end engineering-grade filaments. This acquisition allowed Village Plastics to extend its reach into the consumer and hobbyist markets, maintaining the quality standards that both companies were known for​.

In August 2024, Toner Plastics, a well-established thermoplastics manufacturing company based in Massachusetts, acquired both MakeShaper and Village Plastics. This strategic acquisition aimed to consolidate expertise and expand product offerings in the 3D printing filament market. Toner Plastics' marked a significant step in the continued growth and development of these brands, ensuring they remained leaders in the field of 3D printing materials.
